Hose
•••••••• REINFORCEMENT ••••••••
••••••••••• COVER •••••••••••
Single Wire:
NOVA HHH Standard Cover:
Using high tensile wire, single wire braid hoses will often have ade quate working pressure for many systems and will provide the most cost-effective option.
Pulsar’s NOVA cover comes standard on all braided and spiral hydraulic hoses and exceeds the ISO 6945 standard abrasion requirement. Our NOVA covers are wrapped and are resistant to oils and weather.
Double Wire:
CARBONITE HHHH HARC Cover:
A double wire braid, which is separated by a rubber layer, greatly extends hose life at a small premium while at the same time offering a wider range or working pressures.
For improved abrasion resistance, Pulsar offers our CARBONITE high abrasion resistant cover (HARC). With 10 times the abrasion resistance as required by the ISO 6945 standard and an improved resistance to weathering, this cover option provides longer hose life when compared to our NOVA cover.
Four or Six Spiral:
AURORA HHHHH Armour Cover:
Spiral reinforcement allows for higher system pressures while retain ing flexibility. Wires are applied in four or six spiralled layers rather than in braids.
For the ultimate abrasion resistant cover, turn to our AURORA armour cover. Tested to over 1,000,000 cycles without loss of weight, this bi-layer technology offers improved resistance to oils and weathering and is available on compact and ultra wire hose as well as four spiral hose. Should you require it, the AURORA armour cover can be added to any of our braided or spiral hydraulic hoses by special request. •••••••••• APPPLICATION••••••••• Temperature: It is important to consider temperature both inside and outside of the hose. Different temperature ratings can occur for different fluids. Always refer to the temperature range for each individual hose. For the most severe temperatures, such as polar climates or cold storage facilities, consider using one of our Extreme or Ice-Breaker hydraulic hoses. Pressure:
•••••• STANDARD VS COMPACT •••••• Compact Hose:
Modern manufacturing equipment allows single and double wire braided hose to be manufactured to exacting tolerances. This process control has allowed the development of products with thinner covers and tubes, resulting in products with reduced weight, increased flexibility, and, most importantly for OEM customers, reduced cost.
Standard Hose:
There is a trade-off to using compact hose. Thinner covers mean that the hoses are more easily damaged by abrasion and, as noted above, if the braid is exposed, it will result in an early failure. Furthermore, as all rubbers break down over time from exposure to ozone and weathering, a thinner cover generally reduces hose life, particularly in tight bend situations.
All Pulsar hydraulic hoses meet or exceed industry specifications and feature a 4:1 burst pressure to working pressure ratio. Please note, the working pressure, not the burst pressure, should account for the working pressure of the system, any surges or spikes it may encounter, and any of the hose assembly components including threads and couplings which will result in the lesser of the ratings being used. Media:
Pulsar hydraulic hoses all feature oil resistant tubes and covers. Some Pulsar hoses are designed for use with water only such as Storm Pressure Wash Hose and Water Blast Hose. If the application requires the use of specialized oils or chemicals, use the Fluid Compatibility Chart found in the Technical Information section of this catalog to help guide your selection.

HYDRAULIC COUPLINGS SELECTION GUIDE
Hose
• • • • • COUPLING SYSTEMS • • • • •
• • • • • NON-SKIVE VS SKIVE • • • • •
One-Piece Crimp Couplings:
Non-Skive:
Non-skive couplings can be attached to a hose without needing to remove the outer cover or inner tube. Ferrules have sharp teeth to bite through the rubber cover and create a metal-to-metal bond between the coupling and the hose, removing the need for skiving equipment. Non-skive couplings allow for faster assembly times, protection of the wire reinforcement from corrosion, and elimination of premature hose failure due to under or over skiving. External Skive:
In the aftermarket, distributors often prefer one-piece crimp cou pling systems. One-piece crimp coupling systems are designed to be used on the two or three most popular hose styles, providing the distributor with the most straightforward and convenient solution to a customer’s needs. Two-Piece Crimp Couplings:
External skiving is the process of removing a predetermined length of the hose cover to ensure a metal-to-metal connection between the hose and coupling. By removing the outer cover, the ferrule is able to bite directly into the wire reinforcement. The majority or our skive couplings only require an external skive which is suitable for most pressure applications. Internal Skive:
Broadly speaking, OEM assemblers prefer two-piece crimp coupling systems. Two-piece crimp coupling systems allow interchangeable crimp stems to be matched to a ferrule that is ideally suited to a given hose style, allowing the advantage of inventory efficiency and flexibility. Reusable Couplings:
Commonly used in the agriculture and transport industries, reusable couplings allow hose to be assembled without crimping or swaging equipment. In most cases, reusable couplings consist of two pieces, a socket and a nipple, and can be assembled anywhere with minimal tools.
Internal skiving is used in extreme pressure applications and is done in tandem with external skiving by removing a predetermined length of the inner tube of the hose. During the crimping process, the bare wire reinforcement is locked over a specially designed shoulder on the coupling. Special care must be taken when skiving. Always consult an up-to-date crimp chart to determine skive lengths for your hose assembly.

HYDRAULIC HOSE & CRIMP COUPLINGS • • • • • • • SAFETY NOTE • • • • • • • Pulsar does not recommend mixing and matching hydraulic hose as sembly components from different manufacturers. Tolerances vary from one manufacturer to another and are not necessarily inter changeable. Different components from different manufacturers can cause coupling retention issues which could result in hoses bursting, couplings leaking, and blown-off ends resulting in damage or injury. Crimp specifications for Pulsar hydraulic hose and crimp couplings have all been verified to ensure maximum performance. Always con sult up-to-date crimp charts to determine the correct ferrule and crimp specifications for your hose assembly. Crimp charts can be found on our website: www.pulsarhydraulics.com
HYDRAULIC HOSE PACKAGING
Bulk Hose Most braided and some spiral reinforced hydraulic hose is manufac tured in random rather than fixed lengths. The ranges for lengths for bulk package quantities are given below. Longer single lengths are often available by special request. Most reels contain a maximum of two lengths. For sizes up to 5 ⁄ 8 " I.D., the shortest length on a reel will be 10 ft. For sizes 3 ⁄ 4 " and above, the shortest length will be 20 ft. Nominal Quantity on Reel Package Size Minimum Maximum 150 ft Reel 120 ft 160 ft 250 250 300 500 400 550 700 600 700
We stock precut lengths of most popular spiral hydraulic hoses for easier handling. Look for the EZPAK logo to determine which ones. Please remember that if you have a requirement or a preference for longer lengths, we can often supply to order, since most of our hoses are stocked at the warehouse in bulk coils.

Thread Size Hose Size Part # 4405N-16-16 Coupling Series Thread Style
1. The first element describes the hose type and size. 2. The second element describes the fitting style and thread size at one end (Note: the stem size of the fitting is omitted since it is defined by the hose size). 3. The third element describes the fitting style and thread size on the other end. 4. The fourth element is the overall assembly length in inches, with the following exceptions: i) For ORFS female fittings, the assembly is measured to the sealing face. ii) For elbows, the assembly is measured to the centerline sealing surface of the elbow. iii) If the customer specifies an assembly as 4 feet of hose with ends attached, then the suffix CL will be added to the length to denote cut length. iv) If adapters or quick couplings are to be part of the assembly but not in the length, then the additional part numbers are added after the length. For example… 114-08/5005N-08/5016-08/48/C402-08 …denotes an assembly that is 4 feet long plus the length of the quick coupler. 114-08/5005N-08/5016-08/C402-08/48 …denotes an assembly that is 4 feet long including the quick coupler. 5. The fifth element (if needed) describes the orientation of the fittings when both ends are elbows. Starting with either end as the far end, measure clockwise to describe the angle at the end closest. The following example shows an assembly that would have an orientation of 90°.
1st digit also indicates elbow in 4 digit parts
5 Digit Parts Only Indicates the 1st digit of elbow angle
Within our broad coupling range, the last two digits will specify the thread style, as detailed above. Angle fittings are designated by replacing the third digit with the degree of the angle. For example, a 5005 would indicate a two-piece crimp fitting with a female JIC thread, and a 5095 would indicate a similar fitting but with a 90° elbow. Five digit part numbers are used for less common, often international, fittings where some uncertainty may be caused by inserting the elbow number in the third position. Dash sizes following the base part number indicate first the nominal thread or tube size, and lastly the nominal hose diameter. Please note that for truck hoses (SAE 100R5 & SAE 100R14), the nominal hose size does not match the actual inside diameter, since these hoses were designed to replace common copper tubing. For example, 151-06 hose measures 5 ⁄ 16 " I.D., since it was designed to replace 3 ⁄ 8 " O.D. ("-06") copper tubing.
ADAPTER NOMENCLATURE
Adapters are named based on Root Designations and Dash Sizes…
Part # 1516-08-06
Thread Size
Thread Size Hose or Tube Connection Size (JIC)
NPTF Male 1st digit also indicates elbow in 4 digit parts
JIC 37°Male
Port Size (NPTF)
5 Digit Parts Only Indicates the 1st digit of elbow angle
Root designations indicate the type of thread found on the adapter. In the above example, a 1516 would indicate a JIC 37° Male to NPTF Male adapter. Angle fittings are designated by replacing the third digit with the degree of the angle. For example, a 1596 would indicate a similar fitting to the above example but with a 90° elbow. Shapes, such as tees or crosses, are indicated by inserting the corresponding letter after the first thread designation. In a tee, the root designation describing the branch thread is listed last. Typically, root designations beginning with a 0 indicate a female thread while those beginning with a 1 indicate a male thread. Five digit part numbers are used for less common, often international, adapters where some uncertainty may be caused by inserting the elbow number in third position. A complete list of our Root Thread Designations can be found in the Technical Information section of this catalog. Dash sizes indicate the size of the threads and follow the root designation. The order in which dash sizes appear is independent of the order in which the threads appear in the root designation. As a rule of thumb, the thread that would connect to a hose or tube is the second dash size. The thread that would connect to a port is the first dash size.
