Speci cations for fuel hose used aboard small craft have been standardized by the Marine Technical Committee of the SAE (Society of Automotive Engi neers) under their speci cation J1527. Hose can be broken down into four broad groups (A1, A2, B1, & B2) according to two requirements; fuel permeabil ity and ame resistance. Fuel Permeability : Class 1 hose has the greatest resistance to fuel vapours permeating through the hose itself. Therefore, in enclosed engine compart ments where fuel is constantly in the hose, Class 1 hose should always be used. Class 2 hose exhibit less resistance to permeation, and so are intended for ller or vent hose where fuel does not usually lie in the hose, or where there is no threat of fumes collecting in an enclosed area. Flame Resistance : Type A hose has a ame re sistant cover and will resist burning. Type B hose has not been subjected to any ammability tests. Typically, fuel feed lines will be type A1, combining maximum resistance to permeation and to re. Vent and ller neck hose will be A2 or B2.
