• • • • • • • SIZE • • • • • • • Garden hose traditionally comes in three sizes – 1 ⁄ 2 ", 5 ⁄ 8 ”, and 3 ⁄ 4 ” I.D. Choosing a size depends very much on the application of the hose while at the same time considering weight and flowrate. In Table A, the differences in weight of water in one foot of hose can be seen. With out factoring in the hose, there is an increase of over 50% in weight between 1 ⁄ 2 " and 5 ⁄ 8 ” I.D. and an increase of over 40% between 5 ⁄ 8 ” and 3 ⁄ 4 " I.D. Additionally, in a recent test conducted on our Blue Aqua® garden hose (Table B), flowrate increased by over 14% by choosing 5 ⁄ 8 ” over 1 ⁄ 2 " hose but only by 1% when choosing 3 ⁄ 4 " over 5 ⁄ 8 ”. Given this information, it makes sense that 3 ⁄ 4 " I.D. garden hose tends to be used more in industrial settings where maximum flowrate makes all the difference. When it comes to homeowners, choosing your size simply comes down to preference. The user may choose to sacrifice flowrate for a lighter, easier to handle hose. It is also important to note that nozzles were not included in this test and may further be the limiting factor in determining flow rate. It is important to choose the correct length of your garden hose based on your needs to ensure the perfect balance of pressure and manageability. Green Line offers 25, 50, 75, and 100 ft standard length garden assemblies. Remember, the longer the hose, the greater the loss in pressure due to friction, especially on a hose with a smaller inside diameter (see Table C), which could leave your sprinkler wanting if you’ve gone longer than you needed to! Longer lengths can also be more difficult to maneuver and harder to drain at the end of the season. On a deck or balcony, 25 ft will do the trick. In most urban settings, 50 ft should cover your needs. 75 ft seems to be the magic number in suburban neighbourhoods while 100 ft is good for larger yards and rural settings. Need something longer? We carry bulk lengths and can make something up for you, or, even better, consider buying two lengths and joining them when you need to. Lastly, we also carry specialty lead-in hose assemblies for those hard to reach spigots and irrigation line set-ups in 3, 5 and 10 ft lengths. With a wide range of types and materials including plastic, brass, permanent and reusable, it can be hard to decide which fittings are right for you. Green Line offers solid, cast brass, end fittings on all our garden hose made in Canada and the USA. These brass fittings are also lead-free. On our Industrial Water and Pro Water assemblies, end fittings are permanently attached using brass ferrules. Our Premium Water and Blue Aqua end fittings are attached using interlocking aluminum ferrules which allows for additional fitting retention. Bend restrictors are also added to our Premium Water hose assemblies to help reduce end fitting wear and tear. These assemblies are all built at our ISO 9001:2015 certified Green Line Manufacturing facility. Table B… Blue Aqua® flowrate in 50 ft hose 20l fill time Flowrate Hose I.D. At Green Line, we take a lot of the guesswork out by only offering premium, industrial grade products, so you can be sure your garden hose doesn’t just last a season, but a lifetime. We offer two styles of garden hose – thermo set (rubber) and thermoplastic. Rubber hose is transformed into the finished product by an irreversible chemical reaction called vulcaniza tion, making it perfect for all hot water applications. Plastics on the other hand, must be heated to a soft or liquid state to be formed into hose but there is no chemical reaction, meaning, if they are reheated, they can be reformed. Thermoplastic hoses should not be used for hot water applications. Premium Water, Blue Aqua, and Pro Water are all thermoplastic garden hoses with distinct elastomer formulas to achieve different results, such as greater flexibility or cold weather resistance. Use our application guide to help you choose which hose is best for you!
